Dear Ogdensburg families,
As you are likely aware, on Thursday, Feb. 1, Ogdensburg Free Academy went into a lockdown after our student resource officer received a report that there was an individual in possession of a firearm on our campus. Local law enforcement agencies quickly responded, searched the building for any threats, then accompanied students who were still on campus to the Dome to be picked up by their families.
While we can now confirm that there was no weapon or threat present on campus, a situation of this nature can be unnerving for our staff, students, and families, as well as the greater community. Counseling will be available to students, staff, and families at Madill Elementary, Kennedy Elementary, and OFA campuses for any community members seeking additional support.
The safety of our school community is always our top priority. An event like this reminds us of the importance of the numerous security measures that our school district has in place, including the emergency drills we conduct throughout the school year. We commend our staff and students for the remarkable implementation of our district safety plan during Thursday’s lockdown.
We extend our sincere gratitude to the Ogdensburg Police Department, the St. Lawrence County Sheriffs, the New York State Police, United States Customs, Border Patrol and Homeland Security, the Department of Environmental Conservation Police, the Village of Canton Police, the Ogdensburg Fire Department, and the Ogdensburg Village Rescue Squad for their quick response and assistance during this incident. The partnerships with our local law enforcement agencies and first responders are critical in our efforts to maintain a safe and secure learning and working environment for all.
This event, although unsettling, provides an opportunity to discuss the importance of reporting any concerning behavior or incident to a trusted adult. Working together as an informed, alert, and caring community, we will continue to provide a thriving learning environment for all.
